It’s an insult to our intelligence we as the luhya community for one William Ruto to publicly dress down our leaders by demanding that we support him in 2022. As the luhya community, we owe no one any political debt whatsoever.
If there are any political debts that must be settled, then the Kalenjin community owe us for our support to Mzee Moi for 24 un interrupted years. Secondly, they owe us a political debt because it is the late Moses Mudamba Mudavadi who mentored the Kalenjin and introduced them to politics by recommending Mzee Moi for appointment to the Legislative Council to represent Rift Valley. Indeed, the colonialists wanted Moses Mudamba Mudavadi who was then an education officer in Rift Valley to represent the region to the Council, but he declined to take up the position and recommended Moi who was then a primary school teacher working under him. Thirdly, as the luhya community we have had enough of being second in command (Vice President) and we are targeting either the Presidency or nothing. . It is therefore belittling, demeaning and outright lack of respect to the luhya community for Ruto to imagine that we can play second fiddle to him, of all the people. As the luhya community, we shall reject Ruto’s over ambitious overtures to hoodwink us into blindly falling into his trap. We are endowed with many capable leaders in our land and we must not be treated as if we are desperate. We shall however host him in as many harambees as practically possible because we believe his money is the proceeds of our taxes in the spirit of “kuku hula maharagwe ya jirani lakini wakati wa kutaga mayai inarudi kwao.
