Two candidates dropped out of the Malindi MP race on Thursday and said they will support Jubilee’s Philip Charo.
Peter Ponda (Chama Cha Uzalendo) and Fuad Kombe (Federal Party of Kenya) announced their decision at a campaign rally presided over by Deputy President William Ruto.
“We have decided to drop our candidature in support of our brother because it is only the Jubilee Party that can solve the problems facing the Coast,” Ponda said.
He added during the rally at Mazuruni that the two of them were optimistic the Jubilee candidate will carry the day in Monday’s by-election.
The DP asked residents not to be misled by the Opposition’s promises to resolve Coast land issues.
Ruto said Cord leader Raila Odinga was good at rhetoric as he failed to resolve the issues during his five-year tenure as Prime Minister.
“There is nothing the Opposition can do for you as much as the problem of land is concerned. It is only Jubilee that can solve this problem,” he said.
“Do not let them to lie to you that they will help you when they form the government yet in the five years they were in power they did nothing for you.”
He noted that Jubilee has in the last two years issued more than 300,000 title deeds but James Orengo processed none when he was Lands minister and ally to Raila.
Ruto, who also addressed rallies in Lango Baya and Kakuyuni, asked Malindi residents not to vote for leaders with no agenda for them.
He said the Jubilee administration has done more in three years to solve problems at the Coast than previous governments.
The Deputy President cited the issuance of title deeds, construction of roads, electricity supply to schools and homes and upgrading hospitals.
He said Mariakani-Bomba road is under construction and plans are underway to commence the construction of the Malindi-Sala gate (Tsavo) road.
“We have put Sh400 million into equipping and expanding Malindi hospital to a referral facility,” he added.
Ruto told Malindi residents to ask the county government of Kilifi
to account for the Sh25 billion the national government gave for the transformation of the county.
He said erecting campaign billboards will not help put food on the tables of the county’s people.
Kilifi North MP Gideon Mungaro said the Jubilee government had shown its plan to resolve the region’s land and infrastructure problem.
“I want to make it clear that two years into power, the Jubilee administration has solved the Waitiki land issue that Raila failed to solve when he was in power. We should not be misled by these people anymore,” he said.
National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale said the government has a clear agenda for the Coast, which includes solving the “thorny” issue of land.
Charo said he wants to work with the government for the implementation of existing projects and launch of new ones. He asked voters to “decide our destiny as people of Malindi”.
Leaders present included MPs Mustaffa Idd (Kilifi South), Mwashetani Khatib (Lunga Lunga), Ibrahim Sane (Garsen), Peter Shehe (Ganze) and Emma Mbura (Nominated) and Kwale woman representative Zeinab Chidzuga.
