The other day Joshua Kawino, the Finance Director of ODM was telling me what annoys him most. Mr. Kawino told me in Kajiado by-election, the party spent millions of shillings (more than 30 million) to conduct the by-election. I remember we had to fundraise to get the money to campaign for Hon. Memusi and the polling agents to participate in the election.
Jubilee too used millions to campaign for Mr Tutui. IEBC may have spent close to half a billion. All these were taxpayers money. Now there are two by-elections and the logistical implications, when all is done, will most likely hit a billion shilling mark.
Yet, all the three by elections would have been avoided had President Uhuru not picked politicians who had already been elected, and picked three people in the thousands of kenyans who are qualified, perhaps, more qualified than the three to handle the ministries.
Presidents swear to prudently utilize national resources. Uhuru too swore.
These by-elections are the worst abuse of public resources that President Uhuru is treating the county to.
When they took power, one of the arguments against a re-run was that the sh6 billion set for re-run would be wasted for no good reason when it can be put to good use empowering youths etc.
Today, President Uhuru occasions by-elections at will. Ironically, after doing this, his supporters blame the constitution for not allowing the President to just pick people to be MPs instead of a by-election. Try never ask whether the by-election was necessary in the first place.
But even as he leads the country to waste a billion shillings in by-elections, his wife is now sweating in the streets of Nairobi collecting sh190 million to buy a mobile clinic for Kiambu County.
Then you’ll hear someone who scored an A in KCSE ask how is First Lady’s marathon related to the by-elections. Can’t connect that when the country’s resources are wasted, healthcare becomes a PR marathon event.
Uhuru should surely fall. What he’s doing to the country isn’t right.
