OPEN LETTER TO THE DEPUTY PRESIDENT OF KENYA
Dear Sir,
I want to begin by congratulating you on your acquittal at the ICC. The lawyers have done their job. The legal issues are now behind you and its time to deal with the weighty political issues at hand. It’s against this background that I pen this letter. I want to talk to you in my capacity as a political consultant.
Sir, while the ICC has decided that you have no case to answer, the Mt Kenya court of Political affairs still holds the view that you are guilty! Their rallying cry has always been; ” we forgive but we don’t forget.” Bwana DP, it doesn’t take a genius to decipher the meaning of that phrase. To them, you are still the ODM pentagon leading light who was a key actor in the 2008 mêlée. Don’t believe me? Just visit their blogosphere.
I wish to remind you that right after the 2013 polls, a fellow politico, philosophically captured your union with the President thus: “Mtu akipanda farasi kuelekea safarini, akifika mwisho wa safari, farasi haingii nayeye ndani ya nyumba. Farasi lazima abaki nje.!” Unfortunately Sir, you are the Farasi.
But now that you are free, you don’t have to be the Farasi anymore, you can be the abiria! Awhile back, you took a trip to Bondo and reminded us that we owe you a political promissory note. Well, its now time to cash that political instrument. Forget the “don’t be vague go to Hague,” we also know why you said Raila took you to the Hague. We understand that you had to do what you had to do to survive. Now you are free and urge you to do the right thing.
The Ruto that we know is a shrewd political calculator with a knack for detecting political landmines and carefully avoiding them. I believe that you, like many Kenyans know that Mt Kenya will not return the favor in 2022. In fact, as per your arrangement in 2013, UK was to go for one term and then back you in 2017. This is a point that you emphasized in your inaugural address at Kasarani. How they turned it into a ten-year tenure for UK remains a mystery!
Mr DP, these folks didn’t wait for the ink on the MOU to dry in order to shortchange you! Imagine what will happen if you become a Farasi in 2017! You don’t have to look far. Kalonzo was a loyal Farasi who thought that Kibaki was going to return the favor only to find himself hanging high and dry while the mountain lined up a different power structure without him in the equation.
You know better. Your choices are clear. Jump ship and negotiate a power structure with CORD leadership and lockout the Mountain’s glue-like grip on Kenya or become a ceremonial DP who will be indicted in the Mount Kenya court of public opinion when you ask them to return the favor.
Your Excellency, I want to conclude with an observation. The recent changes in your office are a telltale sign of things to come. A whole DP cannot procure a single piece of stationery without the approval of Statehouse! They have taken everything to Statehouse. Your office is now a shell of what it used to be. Surely, a DP should be much more than a spiffy suit, white shirt and a yellow tie. You deserve better. CORD is wide open.
Yours truly,
Pythagorean Strategist
