The Catholic church and the umbrella organisation of protestant churches in Kenya NCCK together with the USA ambassidor have given an okey to Raila Odinga’s CORD coalition to continue with mass action against the biased jubilee leaning IEBC commissioners.
The Bishop of Eldoret and pre-eminent Catholic voice in the Rift Valley Cornelius Korir today met CORD Leader Raila Odinga in a closed meeting also attended by National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) convener Canon Peter Karanja and other religious leaders.
After the meeting, Mr. Odinga announced another round of IEBC peaceful protests next Monday with the Church leaders endorsing the move.
“A common misconception currently prevailing in certain sections of society is that once people set up institutions, they lose all power over any issues that are meant to be resolved by those institutions. Yet modern progressive constitutions are very clear that the people are the ultimate authority over any institution set up in the constitution.” said Mr. Odinga while addressing the press with the religious leaders.
Mr. Odinga narrated how earlier attempts to disband IEBC were frustrated by the Jubilee regime through its tyranny of numbers.
“The petition, filed by Mr Wafula Buke mid-2014, laid out various charges against the commissioners, which alleged that they had failed in their work and that they had been corrupt. Mr. Buke’s petition was buried in accusations that he had been sent by CORD to fight the commissioners and in the end he was never accorded serious consideration. Jubilee marshaled its numbers in the House and threw out the petition. The contents of Mr Buke’s petition never made it to the platform of national debate,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Odinga and CORD co-principals Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula are said to have met US Ambassador Robert Godec.
