Dear CORD supporters, we’ve defeated a highly performing and competent incumbent before.
The 2007 campaign against Mwai Kibaki, which he lost, tells you that Kenyans, feeling cheated, can defeat an incumbent.
The world over, incumbency is no longer the immovable force to regime change that it used to be. In Sri Lanka, in Nigeria, in Britain, in the US; we’ve seen incumbents served bitter-sweet defeat.
Here in Kenya, we were the African pioneers.
Kibaki’s mistake in the run up to the 2007 poll was the way he presided over state capture by his small ethnic elite, many who all over sudden realized they were infallible because Moi was no longer in power.
If the 2002 defeat of KANU was to defeat Moism more than Moi himself; the new Kikuyu elite around Kibaki in just four short years started creating a new strain of Moism without Moi. They called it Uthamaki.
Moism was a system of state capture and plunder by a small ethnic elite, on the backdrop of unimaginable human rights violations, hollowing out of public service, unprecedented corruption, indescribable incompetence all laced in patronage and hero-worship (mtukufu rais).
Isn’t this the very definition, now, of uthamaki? That repulsive monster at the heart of every billion shilling scam? That system which facilitates a hairdresser to register 20 companies and loot sh1.6 billion? That ‘cat-walking’ system?
Be that as it may, President Uhuru Kenyatta is an incompetent incumbent and will be defeated. And he rigged himself in. Yet to rig again, the scale and magnitude will be so monstrous they haven’t quite figured it out.
And they haven’t because in top of being incompetent, they thought the 2013 electoral rigging machine will remain in place. When we went to the streets, it completely caught them off-guard.
Now they are doing all they can to scuttle the minimal electoral reforms we forced on them.
Of course they are heading nowhere. Soon they’ll hit a dead end.
There are even rumours that they are considering postponing the polls…that too is being furiously challenged.
In other words, UTHAMAKI is hitting a DEAD END.
“…for those who know…”
