The loss by Amina is a confirmation that you cannot discriminate qualified persons over other considerations.
This is the Kenyan who we should all have backed not the one who cannot even get our fellow citizens being executed in Ethiopia and Sudan.
Erastus J.O. Mwencha, EGH; MBS, the Kenyan current Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission is a Pan Africanist with over thirty years of progressive experience in policy formulation and institutional transformation at national, regional and continental levels in Africa.
Throughout his career, he has been an ardent advocate and zealous engineer of regional integration as a leading principle for Africa’s development. He is passionate about Africa and believes in the continent’s rise and growth. Mr. Mwencha also believes in teamwork and his vision is to contribute to Africa’s growth and prosperity by empowering others to cultivate the capacity required to achieve economic, social and cultural development.
Mr. Mwencha was elected in January 2008, as Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission by the Heads of State and Government of the 54 Member States of the African Union and re-elected to the same position in July 2012 with an overwhelming vote of 98%.
Now, with a Kenyan already holding such a high position in the African Union Commission, and with support from 98% of the Heads of State and Government of the 54 Member States of the African Union, won’t it be prudent for the Kenyan President and his Deputy to support him for the Chairmanship of the African Union Commission? That is, if the driving factor in all this is 1) Qualification and 2) The desire for an East African to be the AUC chairmanship?
The answer lies in the events of 2008 when that half Chinese-Gabonese Dr. Jean Ping was the African Union Commission Chairman. You all saw how he went to bed with the Kenyan Head of State Mwai Kibaki and refused to admit Raila’s electoral petition before AU heads of states. But Karma is a real bitch and when he literally won the elections against President Ali Bongo Ondimba and his victory stolen, he had nowhere to run to since he had set a precedent at the AUC of always being partisan on petitions against sitting Heads of State and Government.
Mr. Mwencha however comes across as an independent minded individual who will not play to the whims of the ruling elite. That’s why the current regime are not comfortable with him. They want a stooge who will sing their song in the event that the 2017 elections doesn’t go their way and AUC has to come in. That’s what all this hype about Amb. Amina Mohamed is all about
