The people of Kamukunji are now a jubilant lot after Former MP and Popular Grassroots Champion Hon Simon Mbugua declared he will be contesting the MP seat for the constituency that has been affected by poor drainage, petty crime and harassment of businesspeople under the watch of the incumbent legislator. Things have become so bad under the current leadership people miss the good old days when Hon Simon Mbugua was in power working tirelessly for better welfare of all.
The older Kamukunji Residents we spoke were quick to draw parallels between Hon Simon Mbugua and Tom Mboya, their first MP. They said that Hon Mbugua, like Tom Mboya was easily accessible and highly development-driven and a champion of the rights of all. Hon Mbugua is a man of all people, eloquent and passionate and relentless in solving the issues that bedevil Kamukunji Residents, just like Tom Mboya.
The young generation of Kamukunji Residents miss the camaraderie of having one of their own overseeing their interests. And Hon Simon Mbugua is both a youth at heart and a youth in reality, being one of Kenya’s youngest ever elected MPs of all times. They remember Simon Mbugua as a man of his word who cares deeply about their welfare. According to them, youth empowerment to Hon Simon Mbugua was not just a campaign pledge but his way of life, what he did all the time. Many Kamukunji Residents confirm that Simon Mbugua has remained in touch with the ground and even outside Parliament has executed numerous development projects for the Constituency Residents. Some liken Hon Mbugua to Hon Mike Sonko, the Nairobi Senator and the next Nairobi Governor. It not a coincidence that both Sonko and Mbugua are close political associates and have been working together to Make Nairobi Great Again.
What many in fact fail to remember is that it is Hon Mbugua who introduced people focused politics in Nairobi. In 2007 when Hon Mbugua became Kamukunji MP, legislators were not known to readily interact with their grassroots or execute development projects in public interest from their pockets. Hon Mbugua went the extra-mile to bring development close to Kamukunji people and Residents have not forgotten his gestures and are inclined to reward him with a landslide victory in the upcoming Jubilee nominations.
That people love Hon Simon Mbugua with passion is not surprising because he is a rare kind of politician. Mbugua is a magnanimous man who is deeply loyal to President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Jubilee Party cause. In 2013, in the interest of helping the TNA Party to achieve tribal diversity in Nairobi, he stepped down for the incumbent MP although he was the preferred TNA candidate for many Residents of the Constituency.
As a result of Hon Simon Mbugua’s noble and selfless gesture, not only did Jubilee Party manage to clinch the Kamukunji Constituency seat, but it the only seat in Nairobi that went to a non-Kikuyu who was not so popular but for Hon Mbugua’s support. Of course Hon Simon Mbugua had to bring his popularity and influence in Kamukunji to bear to see to it that the incumbent clinched the seat. He does not regret the sacrifice and clearly no great has never had to make a sacrifice.
If leadership is about having a big heart and putting the greater good ahead of personal interests, Hon Simon Mbugua excelled on this count. This becomes poignant especially when you reckon that Mbugua and the incumbent had been hitherto bitter political rivals. But when President Kenyatta asked Hon Simon Mbugua to make the sacrifice for Party, he did not hesitate because those who know him will tell you that he is generous to a fault. He explains:
Recently, Hon Mbugua was at it again showing that he doesn’t care about position but serving the people. When others in public service were running to court to block attempts to compel them to resign to opt for campaigns, Hon Mbugua was among those who were first to resign saying he believes the time has come to give the people of Kamukunji another chance to elect him. Hon Mbugua’s gesture seems to say: I value the Kamukunji people so much I can’t divide my attention between them and anything else whatever the personal gain.
Speaking to the Media, Hon Mbugua confirmed that he is the best candidate for the Next Kamukunji MP. He said:
“The people of Kamukunji once gave me the chance to serve them. I am coming to ask them to give me the chance again so that I still serve them. Regardless of tribe, race and whichever background, I will serve all people equally. ”
Hon Simon Mbugua is the servant leader Kamukunji needs ASAP to realise Kenya Vision 2030. The area still lags behind and there is no visible development to show for the time since Mbugua relinquished the seat. Clearly, Hon Mbugua’s pledge to restore essential services comes as welcome relief. “Poor drainage, petty crime and harassment of business people will be a thing of the past,” he said.Recently, Hon Mbugua was at it again showing that he doesn’t care about position but serving the people.
