”Sadly IEBC Boss Wafula Chebukati Doesn’t Inspire Any Confidence, He Looks Clueless” -Hon Njenga

Date:

The way IEBC is proceeding with preparations for the fresh presidential election might set up the country for further political uncertainty.

I would expect IEBC if it is a serious institution to do a postmortem of the botched presidential election. They need to inform us on what exactly went wrong and ensure those involved are promptly prosecuted.

They should also report to the public on how differently they plan to conduct the fresh presidential election. As things stand IEBC’s reputation is badly damaged. Internal self-reflection and changes are needed for it to regain public confidence.

Sadly IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati has never inspired any confidence in me. His demeanor reads like that of a person who does not understand or does not care about the enormity of the task given to him and what it means for the future of this country.

He hardly stares straight into TV cameras and has never given any firm assurance of commitment to a clean election. He appears unwilling or unable to take charge of IEBC’s affairs. One wonders if it is a natural weakness or weakness by design.

It is amusing that Chebukati received a letter from Jubilee suggesting the date for the election and he confused it for an order. Does he know IEBC is supposed to be independent of government? While there may be merit for the date, he should have consulted other stakeholders before announcing it.

Chebukati should not suffer any illusions as to what Kenyans expect of him. We want a free and fair election conducted in total adherence to the constitution, laws and regulations. Nothing more; nothing less. Chebukati must and will be held responsible should another sham election be held.
