News doing the rounds in and around Wajir County intimates that Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has defected to Jubilee Alliance affiliate party PNU, marking his unexpected and shocking exit from mother party ODM, of the NASA Alliance. Sources close to him have revealed that the Governor has likely struck a deal with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s camp.
Gov. Abdullahi who was expected to have arrived in Wajir since Thursday (16th March) yesterday, after successfully attending the Governors forum in Naivasha, has instead been postponing his return to the county. His unexpected longer stay in Nairobi is believed to have been influenced by State House in order to lure the only ODM Governor in NEP to join the Presidents party.
The same sources intimated that the Governor had a late night meeting with both the President and his deputy, William Ruto, in line with their common interest of joining forces as August polls draw closer. The meeting is said to have gone on till the wee hours of Thursday morning.
The governor’s defection from ODM to Jubilee will tilt the political situation in volatile Wajir County, bearing in mind that Hon. Adan Keynan, Hon. Mohammed Elmi and Senator Halima Abdille, known arch rivals of the Governor had recently crossed over to the ruling Jubilee Alliance.
It was widely believed that Jubilee Alliance preferred gubernatorial candidate was Ambassador Mohammed Abdi Mohamud, Kenya’s former envoy to Saudi Arabia. He lost to the incumbent in the last general elections and had recently scored a super political goal by winning the support of four opposition legislators who included Hon. Keynan, believed to have fallen out with the incumbent.
It is yet to be seen how the Presidents party will accommodate these vicious political camps, which have constantly incited their communities against each other. Local political analysts lament that if this information is true, then it will mark the end of Gov. Ahmed’s time at the helm of the county leadership.
Wajir, a predominantly CORD zone has always voted for the opposition. Many residents are disappointed and term the Governors move, miscalculated, and blame his political advisors for not reading the mood on the ground before taking major decisions. They say this decision will backfire on the Governor and throw him into political oblivion.
