I always read that Cord leaders should take their wives and children with them to the streets demos. That is an old, tired and defeatist line. Older than most of you. Its used by conservative cowards world over, opposed to change. It was always used by homeguards against MauMau. Used by Kanu against Matiba, Rubia, Shikuku, Wamalwa, Orengo, Muite….name them.
When I was an active demonstrator in college I never asked my mother to come along. And I never cared that I was a poor student and Wamalwa was wealthy. Or that Matiba’s kids were leaving large abroad. Let people enjoy their freedom. Kibaki was in school when his fellow Kikuyu young men were fighting in the forest for him to become president 50yrs later. We never talk about that.
Raila was in detention when his father was in the streets and Ruto was in Yk92. Raila’s wife and children are adults they can choose to join him in demos or not to. But I know the language of struggle is alien to many Jubilee top-shots, the Moi political kids.
