Maina Kiai was detained for almost two hours at the JKIA this morning at 0645 hrs, 20th August 2017, 0645. He was prevented from leaving the country. The immigration officer attempted to confiscate his passport without giving reasons. Maina refused to handover the passport, he managed to call the director of immigration Mr. Kihalangwa and eventually he was allowed to board the plane heading to Europe. Mr. Kihalangwa pleaded to Maina for a chat upon his return.
This is a clear manifestation of harassment and intimidation to human rights activists. The state must understand that civil societies operate srictly under the constitutional provision and the government has a duty to protect our work.
The recently order by CS Matiangi to cease all sort of intimidation to NGOs for ninety days to pave way for investigation is not heeded.
I am of the opinion that no one dares to harras Maina Kiai without a direct order from Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto.
WHAT A SHAME
