Any time the nudes of a celebrity, a sex tape of any Tom, Dick and Harry, or Mary, Tracy and Jane leaks, you will see human beings leaving their numbers on comment section asking for a forward.
More discreet guys will go to the inbox to avoid the shame. A few years ago I joined Kilimani Mums to see what goes on there. I was shocked how bold our women are, and how wild some are, and how total nuts some could get. I did a story in the newspaper and I got blocked. Whereas I thought the things they were discussing about could be beneath some of the my educated friends, but all my friends, even engineers and those with first class, were there, rather shamelessly.
A few years ago I was in Kampala, when I was told a common joke among Kampalans. There is a newspaper called Red Pepper. People consider Nairobian salacious only because they have never been to Kampala. As in Red Pepper can have photo of nude women on the cover. As in, if you are a woman, being Arnold Schwarzenegger (as in Commando) a Paparazzi can snap your pic and you will end up on its cover.
The Red Pepper once published a list of homosexual, with the hope of provoking the public to persecute them. A typical sentence in the Red Pepper will be like, “The married woman known to cheat with the man who owns a marauding whopper”…Or “So and so yesterday got a permission to legally have sex when they wedded…”
Here is the thing. In Kampala, people read the Red Pepper (known as “The Pepper) But not openly. They buy the New Vision or The Nation Media owned (Monitor) and hide the Pepper inside and pretend to be all corporate.
It is something I have learnt in my short life. We like pretending that we are serious. There is a guy who appears on TV, talking big and all that BS that TV pundits do, but some female friends was telling me that he was swearing to her that if he ever gets her to bed, the kind of things he will do to her…
Anyway, earlier today, my senior Sam Kamau was over the edge because people could not stop sharing the pictures of the ill-fated Mercedes that killed the newly elected Nyeri Governor. Never seen something more horrific. I can’t take it.
Like Sam, if there is one thing I hate, is sharing pictures of dead guys, especially the accident scenes. One day, my cousin was knocked by a speeding car and died on spot and my other cousin plastered the photos from the scene rather carelessly, but luckily I had his password (I had signed him up here on FB) so, I signed in and deleted the pictures.
Sometimes Sam Kamau, it is ignorance. Some people don’t know what human decency. But even for those who know but can’t stop doing it, there is an explanation.
It is called Prurience: We all have some innate desire towards violence, sexual acts, and anything morbid. As Tim Lott wrote in the article I have tagged here,
“It is my instinct that the smaller and more inadequate a mind is, the more it tends towards prurience. But perhaps the corollary is also true – that the more the mind tends towards prurience, the smaller and more inadequate it becomes.”
