What is it about the fired National Security Advisor Michael Flynn that’s preventing US President Donald Trump from ‘throwing him under the bus’?
This is the one question confounding Washington DC pundits.
For those who don’t know who Mr. Flynn is, he is President Donald Trump’s former National Security Advisor who was fired after being found guilty of lying to VP Michael Pence. He – Flynn – was also pushed out as Mr. Obama’s Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency after what the Business Insider described as “a series of clashes over his leadership style.” The Obama Admin went on to warn the in-coming Trump Administration not to hire him because they thought he “was problematic and prone to ‘crazy’ ideas.”
Flynn had also failed to obtain clearance from the Department of Defense and State Department before accepting money from a foreign government (Turkey) and RTV (Russia Today), a television station closely linked to the Kremlin.
The retired veteran, Lt. Gen. Flynn had distinguished himself as a loyal and unabashed Trump surrogate when he led the “Lock her up!” chants against Hillary Clinton during the 2016 US General Elections.
All told, Michael Flynn rivals William Samoei Ruto on matters of propriety (or lack thereof).
So with such a track record, it baffles many Americans why (a) it took Mr. Trump almost three weeks to fire Mr. Flynn after finding out that he had lied to VP Penn and (b), the president has supported him at every turn – even risking obstruction of justice charges by asking then-FBI Director Comey whether he could “…..see (his) way clear to letting…..Flynn go…he is a ‘good’ man…”
And just as Americans don’t understand why a president who promised to “drain the swamp” in DC continues to stand by a now-disgraced Michael Flynn, most Kenyans wonder why a president who promised to wage war against “gross malfeasance and corruption” continues to stand by the serial-looter and disgraced William S. Ruto.
In just four years, Mr. Kenyatta’s deputy has compiled a most impressive CV on the very issues the former promised to address once in office – gross corruption. Consider the following scandals, all in Ruto’ last four years as Uhuru’s right-hand man:
– Tape recording implicating him in the KSh.28bn Moi Teaching & Referral Hospital project
– The KSh.100mn “Hustler Jet” hire,
– The Weston Hotel scandal built on grabbed Langata Primary School land,
– Forcing the former CEO of the scandal-plagued Mumias Sugar Australian Errol Johnson to resign AND flee the country,
And the foregoing does not include the philandering ways of the self-professed “prayer rally” attendee nor does it include the one event that brought the two – Uhuru and Ruto – together!
While Michael Flynn was eventually fired, Mr. Trump has essentially mortgaged his presidency trying to exculpate the so-called “good man” – by obstructing efforts to get the truth out of him. It is this curious behavior that prompts pundits to wonder what he, Flynn, has on Trump.
Similarly, Mr. Kenyatta is buried in scandals implicating the deputy president. And while he cannot fire his sister, cousin or his wife, Uhuru could have switched to a less scandal-plagued running mate after the first, second or third scandal implicating Mr. Ruto.
He did not.
Why?
What does William Ruto have over Uhuru Kenyatta and might the president’s last-minute decision to skip the recent Eldoret tour have anything to do with whatever Ruto is holding over him?
