STATEMENT ON SECRETIVE MASS ID AND VOTER REGISTRATION IN CENTRAL KENYA
Our attention has been drawn to a MEMO from the ministry of Interior to all Churches and youth groups in Central region.
The ministry of Interior purports to carry our accelerated registration of persons and instant issuance of National Identity cards (IDs) and Voters Cards by IEBC officials in several areas in Central Kenya, an activity that is NOT happening in other areas.
This sort of IMPUNITY has been going on for long and is at the root of the massive disenfranchisement of other regions who never get this kind of preferential treatment by National Government Agencies.
One would have expected that this new push to mass register people should have been geared towards areas which IEBC did a shoddy job in registering voters in the last mass registration.
Kenyans also expect that the National registration bureau accelerates issuances of IDs in areas where the agency has all but abandoned.
Even with numerous Huduma Centres in Central Kenya, way more than any other region, IEBC and NRB are now searching for youths and voters in hospitals, churches and market centres.
According to the 2009 census and 2012/2013 IEBC voter registration figures, Central Kenya already registered its maximum numbers. Any new registration either targets underage children or the dead.
What else are they registering over there? Animals and plants?
The National Registration Bureau and IEBC must be made aware that because of this impunity and favouritism, we demand NRB and IEBC registers voters across the country using this same method.
We also demand that NRB and IEBC sends MEMOS to all the 47 counties demarcating days of ID and voter registration, and the selected venues which are churches, mosques and market centres.
We note that in other regions, people are made to travel long distances to IEBC and NRB offices where government officials and bureaucrats do everything to frustrate Kenyans from getting these documents.
Every part of this country has a church, market centres and youths with no IDs and Voters Cards just like Central Kenya. Therefore IEBC and National Registration Bureau must comb all these churches and market centres to give Kenyans IDs and Voters Cards using the same method they are currently employing in Central Kenya; which is the most effective in registering Kenyans for both IDs and Voter Cards.
If this will not be the case, the National Registration Bureau and IEBC must be made aware that come election day, every adult in the regions they never accorded these services will turn out to vote, with or WITHOUT these materials.
Here again, we are seeing the desperation of the Jubilee regime which has no numbers; which woke up 2 million dead people to go and vote for them, and who are now desperate registering infants to fill the gaps left by those not resurrecting again to vote for this incompetent regime.
The complicity of IEBC is for all to see. But as we’ve said, If IEBC will not register every adult person of voting age in pro-CORD regions, we are telling our people to get ready to vote, with or without ID and Voter Cards.
Next year, every person of voting age will vote. It will not be business as usual.
Thank you.
Hon. Junet Mohammed, MP.
