BREAKING: FOUR CORD Leaders DENY hate Speech CHARGES, Court to Rule shortly

Date:

Four of the eight politicians detained for four days over hate remarks have denied the incitement charges against them.

They were arraigned at Milimani law courts where they were taken at 5.45am on Friday under heavy GSU escort .

The politicians include Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama and woman representatives Florence Mutua (Busia) and Aisha Jumwa (Kilifi).

Others are MPs Moses Kuria (Gatundu South), Kimani Ngunjiri (Bahati) and Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete), Junet Mohamed (Suna East) and Timothy Bosire (Kitutu Masaba).

Lawyer James Orengo asked the court to grant bail to Bosire, Jumwa, Mutua and Junet saying it was their constitutional right.

He told court the accused have already suffered pretrial punishment.

Orengo urged the court to refer back to how it has dealt with previous applications where bail has been granted. He cited the case of Sonu chairman Babu Owino who was released on Thursday after being in custody for two days.

Noting it is the weekend, Orengo prayed for reasonable bail terms. He said should this be granted, the MPs should stay in court until processing is done instead of being taken back to the cells.

Lawyer Okongo Omogeni, who is also representing Cord politicians, told the court every accused person is entitled to bail unless there are compelling reasons.
