It has now emerged that Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua is behind the attack against Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Thursday during the repeat presidential election.
Sonko who was at his Mua Hills home in Machakos on Thursday after mobilizing voters to turn out and vote for President Uhuru in Nairobi was enticed to head to Machakos town for nyama choma by Mutua’s Chief of Protocol Muzahim Mbole.
The Nairobi governor arrived at Korogocho meat point in Machakos Town moments later where Mbole had ordered for nyama choma for him. Later Mbole informed Mutua of Sonko’s presence in Machakos Town leading to the plot by Mutua to humiliate Sonko.
According to sources Mutua later mobilized a group of youths who stormed Mulu Mutisya Gardens polling station in Machakos where Sonko had gone to inspect the voting exercise and they ordered Sonko to leave the premises immediately.
This compelled Sonko’s motorcade leave the station in haste as the hired Mutua gang chanted NASA slogans.
According to one of the hired Mutua youths, the Machakos governor is scared of Sonko’s growing influence in the Ukambani region and nationally and Mutua is also afraid of Sonko’s close links with State House. Mutua is aiming to be the kingpin of Ukambani politics although Sonko has emerged as the favourite after clinching the Nairobi governor’s seat.
Meanwhile while he was on his way to Machakos Sonko came face to face with NASA supporters who had blocked the highway but he managed to convince them to re-open the road.
