As a concerned parent, I am troubled by the state of affairs at Nairobi Academy Prep School, a once-respected institution that is now in decline.
The school’s leadership and management have created a toxic environment that is affecting teachers, students, and parents alike. The alarming drop in enrollment, poor morale, and unprofessional leadership practices call for urgent action to restore the school’s reputation and provide a safe, supportive learning environment for our children.
Over the past few years, student enrollment has dropped drastically. What was once a thriving school with around 270 students across three streams per year now has a mere 130 students, with some classes reduced to as few as eight.
Parents are increasingly advising one another to withdraw their children after Pre-Prep to avoid exposing them to the toxic environment in the Prep School. When parents raise concerns about the declining student numbers, the Prep Office dismissively states that they don’t care about the school’s population.
Adding to the problem is the high turnover of teachers, which has been a recurring concern among parents. Whenever these issues are raised, the school insists that teachers leave willingly. Yet, we are aware of numerous instances where teachers were fired suddenly and unfairly. This narrative from the school does not align with the reality of the toxic work environment, where teachers are threatened through emails, publicly humiliated during staff meetings, and constantly reminded of their subordinate position.
The current head of Prep, Mrs. Maina, who previously served as the head of Kindergarten at Aga Khan School, was reportedly fired from her position there for frustrating teachers and creating a difficult learning environment.
This pattern seems to have continued at Nairobi Academy Prep School, where her leadership has fostered a culture of fear and intimidation. Teachers have shared troubling accounts of being micromanaged, scrutinized unnecessarily, and subjected to undue pressure. Such practices have demoralized the teaching staff, further compromising the quality of education for our children.
The deputy head, who also teaches science, has exacerbated the problem by secretly gathering information about teachers and using it to intimidate them. Parents describe her demeanor as dictatorial, with a rare smile reserved only for parents. However, her interactions with teachers are reportedly cold and dismissive, further deepening the divide between the administration and the teaching staff. What’s even more frustrating is the misplaced focus of the current leadership.
Mrs. Maina appears more interested in organizing school plays and non-academic activities than addressing critical issues like declining academic performance. This misplaced priority is a disservice to students and parents who entrust the school with their children’s education. As parents, we are demanding immediate and decisive action to secure the future of Nairobi Academy Prep School. This includes the complete removal of the current leadership team, including the head and her deputies, and a thorough reconstruction of the management by January.
If these changes are not implemented, many parents are prepared to withdraw their children from the school. Our children deserve better. Nairobi Academy Prep School must prioritize accountability, professionalism, and a renewed focus on academic excellence to rebuild its reputation and restore the trust of its community.
Only with these changes can the school once again become a place whe
