The CORD leader was received by Siaya Governor aspirant Eng. Carey Orege and other local leaders who will accompany him to an event in Ugunja sub-county to solidarity with local MP Opiyo Wandayi.
The CORD leader is excpected to address a mammoth rally at Ugunja Town this afternoon and with the campaign fever catching on, it is expected that some unpopular but heavily resourced gubernatorial aspirants will attempt to undermine others during the event.
Eng Orege’s increasing popularity has resulted to the camp aligned to the incumbent governor Cornel Rasanga going into panic mode and hiring a fleet of buses from Alego to keep Orege support base in check at Ugunja.
Meanwhile, his other perceived rival for the ticket the Hon Nicholas Gumbo is feeling the heat with reports in Bondo saying Gumbo has this weekend been scampering in the villages of Rarieda which he represents in parliament looking to rent goons to fill up his hired matatus so he can have some support during today’s rally at Ugunja. Sources say Gumbo is receiving tacit support from DP Ruto who yesterday confessed he is responsible for rebellion within ODM and that hired crowds are meant to upstage Raila and attempt to disrupt his rally.
No such problem for the leading candidate Eng Orege, who long before he joined politics, earned respect of Siaya residents when he was driving an admirable campaign in Nyanza schools to uplift stalling education standards as chair to Board of Governors at more than half a dozen public schools. Orege also sponsors a number of students from the area. Many see education and agriculture as Orege flagship in his yet to be unveiled manifesto.
Orege was received by large crowds during his last visit to Ugunja in earlier this year, at which time he also promised to bring Raila Odinga to Ugunja to address the rampant insecurity in the area that had seem locals clash with the police.
During the last weeks of May/ beginning of June, Engineer Orege conducted an extensive tour of Ugunja constituency holding consultative day – long meetings with with the villagers of Madungu, Mun’gao, Sigomre, Got Osimbo, Tingare East, Tangare West, Asango East, Asango West; as well as Sifuyo West, Sifuyo East, Masat East, Masat West, Karandolo East, Karandolo West, Ndenga, Uyundo and Nyalenya. These visits have made Orege a household name throughout Ugenya and Ugunja.
Today’s events have heavy political undertones in a region known to be a fanatical stronghold of Hon Odinga.
