How we have failed ourselves.
By Sam Gichuru
In this country, you can’t have a stand.
In Kenya you can’t point out corruption, If you do, you are a pessimist, you’re tribal and probably pro Cord, you definitely are not eating or are eating under the table.
But it’s hard to ignore the scandals, The bigger the project the bigger the scandal, SGR scam, NYS Scam, the Huduma Center Scam, the School Laptop Scam, The Euro Bond Scam, County Scams (devolution) etc and probably so many others that haven’t been exposed yet.
In Kenya you can’t be happy about progress, if you do, you’re an optimistic, you are pro govt, you’re paid to be an optimist, you’re probably tribal and pro Jubilee and the only reason you’re being so positive is because you’re eating or you’re angling to eat or for a govt appointment.
But it’s hard to ignore the almost completion of the bypasses, rural electrification of 20,000 plus schools, Digital broadcasting from 14 to 77 stations, the NYS recruitment to 20K+ and 100K youths engaged in jobs, Huduma centers, SGR done to 50% +, school laptops, Devolution etc
But if you ask these two groups if they are willing to trade Aleppo (Syria) or Tripoli (Libya) for Nairobi and they both say a resounding no.
In every positive thing this govt has accomplished, it has had an equal negative impact on all of us, but what interests me most is our response as Kenyans, we always throw out the baby with the bathwater.
We lack objectivity, we lack critical thinking, Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally about what to do or what to believe. It includes the ability to engage in reflective and independent thinking. (ref hku.hk).
The fist thing we need to do is start objective conversations, i.e google a topic before you respond, you discuss it without tribal or political or class biases, you shut up if you have nothing to say and learn, if you have insights you share and educate the rest of us.
Do you know such people? can you share or tag them so we start having this conversation right here?
What do you think? is this too much to ask?
