President Uhuru’s tour of Kisii county reached anti-climax when he launched an 11 year old school dormitory, besides that the president had two strong messages to the Gusii people;
1. YOU didn’t vote for me but I’ve included you in MY government.
2. YOU didn’t vote for me but I’ve brought development in YOUR region.
Both are disgusting to a community that has supported ‘Uthamaki’ directly or indirectly since independence. What does he make of the 30% of Gusii voters who casted in support of Jubilee in 2013. Embedded in each (of the two key messages) is a sense of entitlement that is increasingly becoming President Uhuru’s pitch and that is at the root of his problems with Governpr Ali Hassan Joho, Governor Nanok, Governor Jeffwa Kingi etc.
In Mombasa, a self-entitled Uhuru told poor squatters occupying Waitiki Farm that the only reason they would repay costs of title-deeds (which in other regions the same government was issuing for free) is because they didn’t vote for him.
“Lazima tusemezane ukweli…hamukunipigia kura”.
It is this toxic language from a supposed president of all that Joho angrily reacted to.
Be that as it may.
In Kisii, Uhuru lied, severally.
First, it is not true that the Kisii don’t vote for Uhuru. The Kisii actually voted for Uhuru. He got over 100,000 votes there and Kisii is part of the counties that contributed to the 25% in at least half the counties (or something like that) to seal his 2013 ‘win’.
On the second charge ~ “I’ve included you in my government” ~ this too is untrue.
The Kisii elites Uhuru have included in his government were never jobless when Uhuru took power in 2013. Most, if not all, were already serving in various capacities in the last government, and a great number were in private practice, many of them being lawyers.
The jobless Kisii youth, like youths in every other part of the country, saw their opportunities hollowed out because Uhuru regime has not created the conditions it promised for mass employment of young people. Kenya has no industrial base now. Kenya’s formal economy jobs long ceased to be captured in official statistics, even as Jubilee cooked data on millions employed annually in the “informal sector”.
The “Look East” economic diplomacy is now officially a scandal. China is loaning us billions, with terrible conditionalities.
Statistics on how many people have been directly ’employed’ by the SGR keep on fluctuating depending on the occasion. Today it can be 27,000 people, tomorrow it is 23,000, next week it is 59,000 or even 100,000.
The figure is what Jubilee says the figure is. And SGR, despite the attendant propaganda, is a very minute component of Kenya’s economy, speaking job-wise.
Uhuru regime, masked as pro-labour for long, recently revealed itself for all. It is anti-Labour. Ask the professionals of the teachers strike, nurses strike, lecturers strike and doctors strike. Sanctity of labour under Uhuru regime is now a matter of public record. The right to fair wages, the honour you expect from productive work or service rendered, that’s now off the table.
“Tutawasort”. “Lazima waelewe we are a developing country”. Says a fellow who paid Anglo-leasing ghosts billions without prompting. Says a fellow whose government cannot account for over sh200 billion, borrowed abroad and stolen abroad. Says a fellow under whose watch looting state coffers became a science!
Here is a president who created a small group of tenderpreneurs, while hollowing out the traditional base of formal economy professionals, entrepreneurs and small scale enterprise vendors.
You didn’t vote for me but I’ve included you in my government.
