This afternoon, accompanied by H. E Kalonzo Musyoka and Sen Moses Wetangula, I visited the victims of the Huruma building collapse tragedy in Mathare hosted by Deputy Governor H. E Jonathan Mueke.
I received a comprehensive briefing from the Incident Commander before touring the affected area. We noted with great concern the proliferation of buildings on riparian land. I directed the Nairobi City County Government to move with speed to ensure all illegal construction is halted and unsafe buildings demolished to prevent further loss of life.
I then visited the Huruma Social Hall where upwards of 250 victims are currently housed donating blankets, foodstuffs and water to ease the burden. The Nairobi City County Government also committed to meet the funeral expenses of the deceased and clear the hospital bills of the injured.
