A senior police officer at Vigilance House has defended the move by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to stay at the high end and luxurious Nairobi Safari Club located at the Lilian Towers.
Sources at the police headquarters say Sonko has been advised by intelligence sources to stay in the more secured hotel for security reasons.
Sonko’s security has been under threat of late after his bodyguard was shot dead last year by armed gangsters and another worker at his Club Casuarina in Buruburu died in a mysterious fire.
In March last year one of the bodyguards attached to Sonko was shot dead and robbed of his gun in an attack at Mwiki, Nairobi. The officer was shot in the forehead and died while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital.
Bakari Tsuma had dropped Sonko in Gigiri area on a Friday midnight and left for his residence in Mwiki area where he met his death. Immediately after the incident Sonko said he felt his life is in danger after the killing of the father of four. He said the attackers seemed experts and were on a mission.
The incident happened after Sonko had declared interest in vying for Nairobi gubernatorial seat. “We want to know how and why my bodyguard was killed. These seem to be professional people on a mission,” he said.
In September this year two workers at Sonko’s Club Casuarina in Buruburu were killed following a mysterious night fire at the premises.
The midnight fire completely destroyed the restaurant and police are yet to establish the cause of the fire, which broke out when the workers were closing the premises.
Some Kenyans reckon the cartels that the governor has been trying to get rid-off at City Hall are responsible for the incident. Interestingly two County fire engines that were sent to put out the fire were emptied before being dispatched to the location with sources saying those fighting Sonko’s reforms at City Hall are responsible for the ugly incident.
Since July 2017, the governor has been occupying the presidential suite on the 16th floor of the hotel, which is located opposite the University of Nairobi.
He said the county government is not paying for his stay as the facility serves as his private office.
