Nominated Member of Parliament Maina Kamanda on Monday, January 13, accused Deputy President William Ruto of commissioning artists from the Central Kenya region to make songs attacking President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Kamanda claimed that the artists would receive as much as Ksh5 million for each song disparaging the President.
“It is especially worse for people from Central because our President is being insulted every day and the Deputy President is picking up artists who can insult the president.
“If you can make a song insulting the President, you get Ksh5 million. Just to sing one song in Central attacking the President, Ksh5 million,” Kamanda alleged.
Among the leaders present at the press conference were Suna East MP Junet Mohammed and Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege.
The leaders hit back at DP Ruto over his criticism of the planned series of Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) consultative meetings, the first of which was held in kisii County on Friday, January 10.
According to Ruto the BBI process had been hijacked by ODM as he dismissed the meetings as campaign events for the opposition to craft its line-up for the 2022 General Election.
“We accept that BBI/handshake has been hijacked to craft ODM’s 2022 political line up. Unity/inclusivity pretence & associated squander of public resources should stop.
“Unity? the opposition (NASA) is already dismembered/dead; now dividing Jubilee. Big 4 roll out only way to go,” Ruto had tweeted on Sunday, January 12.
According to the publisher by Kenyans,Kamanda claimed that the deputy president seemed to think he was more powerful than the president, asking him to wait for his time to run for the top seat.
“We are asking the deputy president with respect, you’ve been elected to assist the President, please give him his respect.
“We have seen many deputy presidents in many countries, like Uganda and the US, have you heard about them recently? Ours is acting like there’s no president, he’s both the president and the deputy,” he asserted.
Kamanda, one of the most vocal leaders in the Kieleweke faction of the Jubilee Party, further claimed that Ruto’s attacks on Odinga were actually veiled attacks on President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“All this we’re hearing about BBI and Raila, Raila is not being insulted by Ruto at all. He is actually targeting the President,” the veteran lawmaker reiterated
