The confirmation of the first case of the new coronavirus (Covid-19) in Kenya by Health Cabinet secretary Hon Mutahi Kagwe Friday effectively put on hold the much publicized BBI rally that was set for Nakuru.
CS Kagwe banned all forms of public gatherings as part of the measures to contain the virus that has been declared a global epidemic with China, South Korea, Italy and Iran leading with highest cases of infection.
“All public gatherings, rallies, crusades and meetings of national nature have all been banned. This includes BBI rallies. Interschool activities like drama, music festivals and sports have been also been banned,” he said.
But churches will continue to operate as usual as long they provide hand sanitisers to their congregants, the minister added.
Reacting to the development, ODM leader Raila Odinga, who with President Uhuru Kenyatta created the BBI task force, welcomed the move and praised the government’s efforts to protect the population from the pandemic.
“The confirmation and the systematic disclosure of information indicate the existence of a clear plan by the government to provide citizens and visitors with timely and accurate information on the evolving situation.”
Meanwhile online pundits are saying the cancellation of the Nakuru BBI rally is a blessing to Raila Odinga since allies of DP Ruto led by senate majority leader Kipchumba Murkomen, Nakuru senator Suzan Kihika and MP Kimani Ngunjiri had an evil plot to humiliate the People’s president by deny him chance to address the crowd and also had hired hecklers to humiliate those allied to the handshake.
On Wednesday evening on CITIZEN TV’s JKL, senator Hon Murkomen confirmed he had be tagged to be a joint MC at the event and swore on National TV that they will not allow outsiders to lecture them in Nakuru. Senator Suzan Kihika and Hon Kimani Ngunjiri are well known Ruto sycophants and can do anything to proclaim their position as top foot lickers of the hustlers.
