Months after the brutal murder of Brian Olunga, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa remains a free man. Despite overwhelming evidence, authorities have failed to hold him accountable, raising serious concerns about impunity and political protection.
A Cold-Blooded Killing
The murder happened on August 8 at Chebukwabi in Kimilili, Bungoma County. Witnesses say Barasa pulled out a gun and shot Olunga in the forehead, killing him on the spot. The victim, a 21-year-old university graduate, was working as an aide for Barasa’s political opponent during the elections.
The shooting took place at a polling station, where tensions were high. Instead of de-escalating the situation, Barasa resorted to violence, ending the young man’s life in broad daylight. After the killing, he fled the scene and disappeared.
Police Issued a Warrant, But No Arrest
Following the incident, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) issued a warning, demanding that Barasa surrender within six hours. A team of homicide detectives and intelligence officers was deployed to track him down.
Authorities also warned that anyone found protecting him would face legal action. But despite these threats, the MP remained in hiding. Days turned into weeks, then months, and no significant action was taken against him.
A Case of Political Protection?
The failure to arrest Barasa has raised questions about political interference. Why has law enforcement failed to act decisively? Who is shielding him from justice?
The case has followed a familiar pattern seen in Kenya, where powerful politicians evade accountability while ordinary citizens suffer. If a sitting MP can openly commit murder and walk free, what does that say about the justice system?
A Family Still Waiting for Justice
Brian Olunga’s family has been left devastated. They lost a son, a brother, and a young man full of potential. They have pleaded for justice, but their cries have gone unheard.
They demand answers. Why has the case stalled? Why is a known murder suspect still holding office?
The killing of Brian Olunga is not just about one life lost. It is about a justice system that favors the powerful over the weak. It is about the culture of impunity that allows politicians to act above the law.
As time passes, the silence surrounding the case grows louder. Will justice ever be served, or will this be another case of a politician getting away with murder?
