Narc-Kenya Party leader Martha Karua has pulled a major political surprise after she announced her support for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election bid.
Speaking at Kianyaga Catholic Church in Gichugu on Thursday, Karua stated that she had decided to support Kenyatta in 2017 elections since he is the choice of Kirinyaga people.
She noted that the Head of State is determined to fight corruption and promised to support his efforts.
“My party will not be fielding a presidential candidate in 2017 and the residents from this region want Mr Kenyatta to go back to State House. I have no problem with that.”
“President Kenyatta is doing his best to fight corruption and I fully support his endeavours. I will join hands with the President to fight graft in the country. Everyone should back efforts by the Head of State,” Karua stated.
The Narc-Kenya leader reiterated that she would be in the Kirinyaga gubernatorial race where she is set to compete with former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru, who is also eyeing the same seat on a Jubilee ticket.
Other candidates seeking the Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat include Kirinyaga Central MP Joseph Gitari, Muriithi Kagai and current Governor Joseph Ndathi.
On Wednesday last week, Karua divulged that she would begin her campaign for the Governor’s seat in two weeks time.
The former Gichugu MP had previously warmed up to the Opposition and even helped them push for reforms in different institutions.
However, in the last two months, she has steered clear of CORD affairs and after her latest announcement, it’s now clear that she is set to chart her own political road.
