DP RUTO MUST NOT UNDERMINE WOMEN LEADERS:
On 1st August 2016, some Hon Members of the Busia County Assembly visited Deputy President Mr William Ruto in Nairobi to discuss some unspecified “development issues.” During this visit, the DP made my re-election and that of Busia Governor Mr Sospeter Ojaamong the sole subjects of discussion.
The DP was categorical that I, Mrs. Hon Florence Mutua, was a stranger in that County and should not be re-elected. I wish to address the DP on this subject.
I wish to tell the Deputy President to get off my back and steer clear of my and Busia politics. I am a proud daughter of Western Kenya by birth and I am a resident of Western by marriage. Ruto must not attempt to define my origins for me and he must get out of my personal birth and marital life.
I also wish to ask Mr Ruto to stop undermining women who have fought so hard to secure seats in our immensely male-dominated politics. However, if the DP has problems with me personally, I challenge him to face me directly and stop using MCAs to fight his personal wars.
Women across the parties are facing serious challenges to secure electoral seats. The least women expect from the Deputy President is support for those who have secured election and those seeking to be elected.
DP Ruto should bear in mind that even in his side of the coalition married women who contested and will contest in their places of birth are facing it rough. We expect him to give them support, not undermine them through reckless declarations driven by male chauvinism.
Finally, I appeal to the DP to focus on things Kenyans expect him to handle. The country is totally off track. Schools are on fire, there is run away corruption, unresolved extra-judicial killings, insecurity and high levels of unemployment for the youth. These challenges are so many and open that I find it difficult to understand why a whole DP would convene a meeting just to discuss me. His brand of politics is tearing the nation apart.
