NASA: Says IEBC has refused to provide answers to its questions regarding: use of technology and involvement of stakeholders, transparency in deployment of technology, cleaning the voter register, integrity of IEBC data, BVR kits and NYS.
NASA: We are ready to work hand in hand with IEBC to resolve the issues. But it must begin with the Commission being sincere with Kenyans.
NASA: The task ahead for IEBC is not just a matter of managing an election. It is a serious matter of national security.
Nasa wants an audit of data from the registrar of births and deaths as well as names of third parties with access to IEBC servers.
These were part of the demands the coalition informed the IEBC of during a February 8 meeting.
Co-principals Raila Odinga (ODM) and Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper) on Thursday said the election will not be credible if the issues are not addressed.
Amani leader Musalia Mudavadi was also present at the press conference called by the leaders at Raila’s Capitol Hill office. Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang’ula did not attend the presser.
They said the commission’s inaction on the matters points to their lack of preparedness to conduct the general election.
The leaders further warned that IEBC has neither regard for poll timelines nor the laws that govern the same.
Raila asked IEBC commissioners to stop their reluctance towards addressing the said issues.
“We have always said that we are ready for elections. But they must be free, fair and credible. It takes two to tango,” Raila said.
He said the country cannot hold an election with a “dirty” voters register, adding that the vote must be within the law.
Nasa sought to stop the tender for supply and delivery of ballot papers, election results declaration forms, and poll registers.
“We went to court because ballot materials should be the last thing to be procured,” Raila said.
“You cannot print ballot papers and yet you still don’t know who the aspirants are,” he added.
“IEBC should work with us and we will help them conduct the next election on time,” the ODM leader said.
For his part, Mudavadi said it is unfortunate that the electoral agency has dodged most of Nasa’s complaints.
He said the opposition has evidence to support its claims, citing a list of NYS youths whose names allegedly found their way to the IEBC’s register.
“We called the youths and they confirmed being registered as voters without their knowledge,” Mudavadi said.
The leaders said that following the revelations, the voters’ register must be audited by a qualified international company.
“We also want the Kenya Integrated Election Management System put in place on time,” Kalonzo said.
He added that IEBC must involve all stakeholders.
