PRESS RELEASE; MIGORI INCIDENT ON 3RD APRIL 2017
Yesterday, on the invitation of my brother, Hon.Junet Mohammed, I visited Migori County as we continue to expand and increase ODM activities countrywide.
Hon.Junet Mohammed also serves as the party’s Director of Elections and is a widely respected and progressive party luminary who has sacrificed a lot to promote and champion ODM’s democratic and reform agenda in and out of parliament.
I was also accompanied by Senator James Orengo (Siaya), Senator Prof. Anyang Nyong’o (Kisumu), Hon. Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir (Mvita), Hon Abdikadir Aden (Balambala) and John K’Obado (Uriri).
We had a successful political tour where we encouraged our supporters to come out in large numbers in the forthcoming General elections.
I was privileged to open a new ODM office in Keyancha, Kuria . We urged the people to ADOPT A POLLING STATION to ensure realization of true participatory democracy and also to protect our votes.
On our final rally at the Posta Grounds in Migori town, an unfortunate incident occurred whereby hired goons caused a skirmish that resulted in cases of gunfire ; in the melee one of my security personnel sustained a gunshot wound on the leg and I am glad that he is out of danger and he is recuperating at the Nairobi Hospital.
The incident was unfortunate and though it was attributed to local political rivalry, it is without a doubt that it also had the hallmarks of an assassination attempt aimed at my life.
As the Deputy Party Leader of ODM, I wish to state as follows ;
1. I welcome the directive by the Director Of Public Prosecution for a comprehensive and objective probe into the incident with a view to bringing the culprits to book.
2. We as the leadership of the Change Movement strongly condemn all forms of political intolerance,violence and impunity as they undermine the democratic values and the tenets upon which our party is founded.
3. As a Party, we have also initiated and commenced our internal investigations into the rather shameful incident and I guarantee all our supporters nationally that stern disciplinary action shall be meted against all those found culpable.
4. The Orange Democratic Movement wishes to reaffirm its commitment to a peaceful,free and fair elections in its upcoming party primaries.
It is imperative to note that the Party Leadership shall traverse and crisscross the entire republic in its bid to popularize the party and we urge all leaders not to construe the party activities for perceived endorsement or favors to any incumbent or aspiring leader within the party.
Mbele Pamoja.
HASSAN ALI JOHO
Deputy Party Leader
Orange Democratic Movement
