The latest episode in NASA’s game of throne is that Mr. Isaac Ruto and his Chama Cha Mashinani are primed to become part of the National Super Alliance (NASA) Party – with “equal status to ODM, Amani National Congress (ANC), Wiper Movement Party and FORD Kenya” – or maybe they are not!

The intrigue aside, this latest move, if true, has the potential of being the “Kibaki Tosha” master stroke of 2002 that propelled the then-hobbled Mwai Kibaki to his first term. The question, yet to be answered, is this: Which one of the five principals – Raila, Kalonzo, Mudavadi, Wetangula and now Ruto – will be “Kibaki” and who will be the “Wamalwa” i.e. Kijana Wamalwa.

The other argument one can make is that this is a case of “too little too late” not to mention more evidence that the maybe five co-equal partners run the risk of diluting their votes and allowing the corrupt and incompetent incumbent duo of Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto to slither back into State House to continue eating. This latter scenario played out in 1992 and 1997 during the early days of multi-partyism and the Moi era.

To repeat a point I have previously made, none of the NASA principals have the heft, gravitas or national base of Raila Odinga. There is absolutely no way any one of them will win the August 8, 2017 General Elections without RAO’s backing – plain and simple. Adding Ruto to the fold, on the other hand, gives NASA yet another “bucket” of voters that Jubilee will NOT be getting – and that’s always a good thing.

Two Questions:

(1) Who will be at the top of the ticket?
(2) Is this a case of “too little too late”?
