Kisumu Killings; It’s A Crime Being Poor In Kenya

Date:

By Mukami Marete

I acknowledge my class privilege. It is a crime to be poor in Kenya. I can write whatever I want in the comfort of my home in a neighbourhood where not one gunshot has been fired.

I can engage in heated discussions on social media with others about peace while my children sleep safe and without the sting of tear gas in their eyes.

Meanwhile, a mother in mathare tonight will look at the empty spot where her daughter might have been sleeping if she hasn’t been shot. Being poor is the crime.
