Mercy Gathigia has been appointed acting Knec CEO following Joseph Kivilu’s dismissal over widespread cheating in the 2015 KCSE exam.
She previously served as senior deputy director and head of the Curriculum and Research Services department at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development. She also held the chief executive officer post in acting capacity on several occasions.
Gathigia has a Master of Science in Entrepreneurship from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
She also has a Bachelor of Education degree in business studies and economics from the University of Nairobi and a diploma in Technical Education (English and business studies) from Kenya Technical Teachers College.
Kivilu and nine top officials of the disbanded board have recorded statements with the police over the exam irregularities.
