Kenya Urban Roads Authority Demolishes Shops In Westlands For Road Expansion, Nairobi County Not Involved

Date:

The curio shops in Westlands, Nairobi, were demolished on Thursday to pave way for the expansion of Lower Kabete and Peponi roads. The demolition, which was executed under tight security, was ordered by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority. In 2016, KURA issued a notice for the demolition citing the redesign of the two roads to ease traffic congestion on the route.

At that time, former Nairobi Trade CEC Anna Othoro said curio stall owners would be moved to the City Park market. Others were to be relocated to the Westlands main market. The county government also claimed the curio triangle market was on a road reserve.

Jane Wanjiru, a trader, said they were supposed to vacate the premises on April 27, according to a notice issued on April 13. She said most of traders got wind of the demolition on Wednesday evening and removed their wares at night.
