As soon after the National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga was cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to enter the 2017 State House race, he together with the pentagon team – running mate Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi (ANC), Moses Wetangula (Ford Kenya) and Chama Cha Mashinani leader Isaac Ruto –kicked off their first official campaign at Jacaranda Grounds.
Raila – who has recently been nicknamed Joshua by his followers because he promised to deliver the country from political oppression, much like the biblical character who took Israelites from the dessert to Canaan– took time paint a picture of the Promised Land that he will take Kenyans to after August 8.
Speaking to a charged crowd, Raila said that he would make the load lighter for Kenyans by reducing the cost of basic commodities.
“I want to assure you and every Kenyan out there that a NASA government will ensure that maize flour, sugar and fuel prices are lowered, taxes imposed to housing be lowered to ensure that rents are sustainable to each and every Kenyan,” said the ODM party leader.
Faulting Jubilee for mismanaging the education sector and failing to raise the basic capitation fee of Ksh.12,000 per child, Raila said that his government will prioritise the provision of free primary and secondary school.
This move, Mr. Odinga says, will ensure that every child in Kenya whether the poor or rich have access to education – something that he said is a key tool in developing a prosperous nation.
Speaking to the business community, Raila said his 5-person team has a formidable plan to jumpstart the economy , adding that businesses are currently struggling as they are operating in a hostile business environment.
Raila further stated that in NASA’s Canaan, bottlenecks were put in place to aid corruption would be a thing of the past.
He promised the businesspeople that, unlike the Jubilee era, his administration will ensure that they will not have to pay bribes to operate in the country.
“Every official wants bribe from businesspersons. Even when someone wants the police help they tell him/her that their vehicle lacks fuel, but we see the police cars driving in places where local liquor is served. My government will make sure that police force do not harass Kenyans and that they serve the interests of Kenyans,” added Odinga.
Speaking during the function, other NASA members assured Kenyans that the Opposition’s agenda for the country will ensure that they lead more prosperous lives.
They urged voters to come out in large numbers as this would ensure that Raila ‘Joshua’ Odinga would be given the mandate to take Kenyans to Canaan.
