Governor Joho sacks all cabinet ministers in Mombasa county

Date:

The entire cabinet of Governor Hassan Joho was kicked out of office on Wednesday despite the county having not advertised the positions.

Ten members of the cabinet have now handed over duties to Chief Officers, waiting for the appointment of the new team that will steer Joho’s agenda for the next three years.

Legally, even after the expiry of the contracts of CECMs, the county should formally declare the seats vacant through advertisement.

“It is true the contracts they had came to an end on November 12,” said Job Tumbo, the governor’s chief of staff when confirming the cabinet’s departure.

Tumbo denied that the departure of the entire cabinet would affect operations of the devolved government.

“It is a normal thing for contracts to come to an end and there is nothing abnormal. Accordingly, there is no crisis,” Tumbo who is also acting County Secretary said adding that the outgoing CECs are “in the process of clearing.”

A communication officer in Joho’s team who requested not to be named on Thursday said that the governor doesn’t have intentions of renewing contracts.

The officer said Joho has ordered the team to write a report on why they should have contracts renewed, adding that he wants them out.

“He has asked them to write a report on what their achievements are and why they need a job. But I can assure you that he’s done with them,” he said.

Joho has been under pressure from a number of legislators from Mombasa, with Nyali MP Mohammed Ali waging an onslaught against his administration.
