Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga now says that she will take it upon herself to see to it that the Punguza Mizigo referendum push does not succeed.
The Punguza Mizigo initiative led by Thirdway Alliance boss Ekuru Aukot is seeking to among others, eliminate the Woman Representative slots, in a bid to reduce the cost of running the government.
But speaking on K24’s Punchline show on Sunday night, Wanga declared total war on the same, on grounds that it seeks to take away the women’s seats.
“The Punguza Mizigo is the greatest attempt to claw back gains made by women. We cannot allow a clawback. I declare total war on Punguza Mizigo,” she said.
Wanga joined hands with fellow panelist and Uasin Gishu counterpart Gladys Boss Shollei who also took issue with Punguza Mizigo’s attempts to reduce parliamentary seats.
She termed it “a joke gone too far”, which now needs to be stopped.
“I agree with Shollei that the Mzigo is not in Parliament. Punguza Mizigo is a joke taken too far. You can’t abolish constituencies. It doesn’t make any sense,” she added.
The remarks come at a time when the ODM party, right from its leader Raila Odinga, has been attempting to shoot the bill down as it pursues its own changes.
Contrary to Punguza Mizigo, ODM has been banking on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) to introduce additional seats in the executive, and a return to the parliamentary governance system.
