MY STATEMENT ON THE FEDHA ROAD TO NYAYO ESTATE GATE B.
I want to take this early opportunity to take responsibility and apologize for the deplorable condition of the Fedha Road to Nyayo Estate Gate B. There is no excuse why that road should be in that condition. For information, under Nairobi Regeneration Program, the Rehabilitation of Eastlands Roads including the Fedha Road is under Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) to be done with financial contribution of Nairobi City County. As a County Government, we made a commitment to pay Ksh. 900M to KURA as our part of contribution towards rehabilitation of diverse roads including Fedha Road under the programme by the Authority in the last Financial Year 2018/19. As at 12th July 2019, we had paid Ksh. 800 Million to KURA. Find attached herewith various correspondences between ourselves and KURA on the same. In July, I ordered a process of monitoring and evaluation to determine value for money (still ongoing) before releasing the final installment of Ksh. 100 Million. This Financial year 2019/20, as a County Government we have committed to pay out to KURA another Ksh. 1.5 Billion for further rehabilitation of City roads and we are processing the monies. As recent as 28th October 2019, the County Roads Chief Officer Eng. Karanja wrote to KURA advising on the need for rehabilitation of various roads rapidly deteriorated by storm water after the onset of the short rains. Therefore, I’m at pains to understand why KURA is yet to rehabilitate the Fedha Road which is an all-important road that links Nyayo Estate, Tassia and Fedha Residents to Outering Highway.
Even though I note that the extensive damage of the road has been occasioned in part by the heavy vehicles of the Outering Roads Contractor which are using the Road to their project site next to Aviation College and in part by storm water due to the poor drainage on the road. But since Nairobi Regeneration Program is a joint project of the National Government and Nairobi County Government and because we don’t believe in blame games and the buck stops at my desk, after the well-meaning complaints by wananchi which I sincerely and gratefully welcome, today I ordered our Roads Sector CECM to send our Engineers on the ground and leveling works have began in earnest to repair and rehabilitate the Fedha Road by end of this November 2019. At the same time, we shall write to KURA tomorrow to get to understand why the road remains undone and also to account for the money already disbursed to the Authority by Nairobi City County. Kindly accept my apologies for the pathetic condition of the road and thank you all who highlighted the issue to my attention.
