Irish ambassador to Kenya Vincent O’Neill caused fuss on social media after he vehicle was stuck due to impassable roads and forced to ride an ox cart to open a school in Makueni. The envoy now understands top Jubilee politicians are always riding choppers and cannot stand road network especially in the counties.
The photos of him riding the cart due to the poor terrain have elicited excitement among Kenyans who have applauded him for his down to earth character. The photos reminded Kenyans of the day Senate majority leader Kipchumba Murkomen was stuck and had to be rescued by villages in his home county of Elgeyo Marakwet.
Ambassador O`Neil said in a tweet that he had visited St Patrick’s Primary School Kawese, Makueni county supported by Irish organization Kenya Child Foundation.
“Privileged to open wing of St Patrick’s Primary School Kawese, Mukeini County today following support from Irish organization Kenya Child Foundation. Access to the school difficult due to recent rains/muddy road no problem via Ox Cart,” O`Neil posted.
O`Neil is the first resident Irish Ambassador in Kenya in 26 years after Ireland closed its doors in 1998 during the financial crisis that hit the World.
This comes at a time when Makueni was voted during the fifth devolution as the model county following the strides it had made in devolution.
However, the recent rains have destroyed the roads rendering them impassible.
Last week governor Kivutha Kibwana said that the county needed Sh1billion to repair damages caused by the rains.
