Kilifi MCAs have passed a motion seeking to halt further development of the multi-billion Galana-Kulalu one million acre food project that was started by the government three years ago.
The members of the county assembly passed the motion on Thursday (1st March) that aims at stopping the government investing any further in the project that has so far consumed Sh7bilion until members of the public views over the same are heard.
So far, only 5000 acres out of the targeted one million acres for the irrigation scheme has been put under crop even as most parts of the Country continue to grapple with the pangs of hunger.
The motion tabled by Adu MCA Stanley Kenga further directs the County’s Land and Agriculture executives to initiate measures to stop the project citing that the residents of Kilifi ought to have been involved before initiating the project which has taken a lot of their resources.
“The people ought to have been consulted before initiating the project which violated Section 114 of the County Governments Act, 2013.The project was initiated to address issues of hunger but we have nothing to show four years down the line,” he said.
The Galana-Kulalu project is a food security Jubilee flagship touted as a solution to the cyclic hunger problems in the Country and is set in Kilifi and Tana River Counties amongst those worst hit with hunger.
The project the leaders argue, has further led o the drying up Sabaki-Galana river that residents depended on for domestic use and agriculture adding that “If the project was to address the food security of Kilifi and Kenya, there should be something to make us proud five years down the line.
