CONDOLENCE ON THE DEATH OF HON DENNIS AKUMU:
On behalf of my family and the CORD and Orange Democratic Movement fraternity, I wish to express my profound grief at the passing of veteran trade unionist, freedom fighter and politician Hon Dennis Akumu.
Hon Akumu has been at the heart of the many struggles that gave birth to and shaped our nation from the 1950s to date. From the fight for independence, the struggle for workers’ rights at independence, the fight for democracy and the widening of democratic space, Hon Akumu never shied from any effort that uplifted our people and freed them from any form of enslavement.
In his death, Kenya has lost a veteran freedom fighter, trade unionist and pan Africanist driven by conviction and spirit of public service. His death marks the end of an era particularly in the Labour movement. It is our hope that his life and work will remain a source of inspiration for all those struggling to establish a just, democratic and fair society in Kenya.
