Reprieve for Itumbi as court allows Safaricom to register his phone number

Date:

The courts have allowed telecommunications company Safaricom to register Dennis Itumbi’s mobile phone number.

Nairobi Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku lifted a ban that had been placed on the telco after the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confiscated his SIM card for forensic investigations.

DCI also wrote to the telco confirming that they had concluded their investigations on the matter and they were free to restore the line back to Mr Itumbi.

Mr Itumbi is accused of having forged a letter that outlined an alleged plan to kill Deputy President William Ruto.

Magistrate Mutuku set hearings for the case on September 2 and 3, 2019.

Itumbi was accused of being part of a WhatsApp group known as Tanga Tanga which is believed to be promoting DP Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid.

The group had 256 members who were all summoned by the DCI for investigations.
