Can somebody whisper to Nairobi City governor Mike Sonko that Security is not devolved to counties, CS Matiangi and IG Boinet are fully responsible and therefore he (Sonko) should spare us unnecessary explanation and interviews, again Interior CS Fred Matiangi and Inspector General of Police Boinet are fully responsible. Period!
It a pity to see Mike Sonko struggle to calm the city residents on matters security, the governor should focus on core issues in his in-tray; provision of water, garbage collection, fixing sewerage, potholes etc. It is unfair for Uhuru to let Sonko bear the insecurity burden as Matiangi and IG Boinet go mute on muggings in the CBD.
The wave of insecurity situation across the country puts police Inspector General on the spotlight just a month after the last general elections.
Over the last one month, the country has seen a sharp rise in daylight muggings and theft in Nairobi, Kisumu, Kiambu and Mombasa counties.
Boinet has not issued a statement since the wave of broad daylight robberies started early this month. It is the responsibility of Kenya Police to provide internal security, whether there are hawkers in the city or not it is their job to secure mwanainchi.
The Nairobi City County government has desperately formed an anti-mugging squad to deal with the rising cases of daylight muggings and Governor Mike Sonko has of late conducted late night inspections in the city’s Central Business District to assure Nairobians of enhanced security in the CBD.
However Nairobi Police Chief Japheth Koome says it is a common trend in January but cautions that already a multi-agency security team has been activated to curb the menace. Well, when shall we see action?
“We are not going to give them a chance to harass the residents of this city. We are going to deal with them according to the law,” Koome asserted.
Already, Koome says police are engaging the Nairobi County Government in a bid to ensure the flow of hawkers within the city is controlled while plans to profile street children are underway since some of them have been engaging in crime, while others are in the country illegally.
Hotspot areas in Nairobi include Temple Road, Hakati Road, KTDA area Moi Avenue, Haile Selassie from railway termini towards Jesus is Alive Ministry Church.
Other areas are Racecourse Road, Uyoma Road, junction of Ronald Ngala, Pumwani Road, and the Globe Interchange.
While in the past the thugs would snatch phones and handbags, they are also removing weaves from women and pieces of jewellery.
