More than Jubilee 50 MPs in the Rift valley supported Kanu in the recently concluded Kericho Senate by-election, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has said.
Jubilee Alliance Party candidate Aaron Cheruiyot won the March by-election, beating Kanu’s Paul Sang by more than 50,000 votes.
Moi said the MPs cited dictatorship by Deputy President William Ruto and quietly approached him to offer support for Sang.
“The MPs could call to give me moral support and encourage me to clinch the post, as they feared supporting me publicly,” he said.
He was speaking in Salawa, Baringo Central subcounty, on Saturday during a fundraiser.
Moi was with Emurua Dikirr MP Johanna Ng’eno.
Speaking in Kalenjin, the senator said the MPs ‘secretly’ rallied behind Kanu throughout the campaigns.
He said although Jubilee leaders finally carried the day, Kanu had “major support” from some Rift Valley MPs.
Moi did not name the MPs. He said he will not file a petition against Cheruiyot’s election following alleged rigging, saying “we don’t believe in the Kenyan courts”.
Kapseret MP Hon Oscar Sudi, Nandi Hills MP Hon Afred Keter, Senator Lonyangapuo, Senator Ziporah Kittony, Hon Ngeno and Governor Isaac Rutto were in the forefront in the Kericho Senate campaigns where to joined Gideon Moi in campaigning for KANU’s Hon Sang.
Ng’eno said if Jubilee “stole Eurobond and NYS funds”, Kericho election was not an exception.
He said Kanu supporters still believe they won the Kericho seat “before they were rigged out”.
