In a shocking turn of events, a suspect facing rape charges reportedly stole the phone of the prosecutor during a court hearing.Joseph Ombogo, who was out on bail for a defilement case, had accompanied his father to the court to confirm the hearing date details of his ongoing case. The prosecutor had left his phone lying on the table, on coming back the prosecutor realised his phone was nowhere to be seen.
This prompted a search in the court room. After thorough search and looking through the CCTV footages, it then showed the man collecting the phone and quietly going on about his business, then leaving the court.
To people’s surprise , the man denied stealing the phone, claiming that he “collected” it.
“I did not steal any phone from anyone. I collected it. It was there (on the desk). In fact, what attracted my attention to it was a paper. When I opened the paper, I saw the phone and collected it,” claimed the man.The phone was recovered without significant damage, but the trial was halted for several hours as security protocols were reviewed. The judge overseeing the case expressed deep concern over the breach, emphasizing that such behaviour undermines the judicial process.
The prosecutor, while shaken, vowed to continue seeking justice for the victim, calling the incident a sad reflection of the challenges in the legal system. “This disruption will not stop us from our pursuit of justice,” the prosecutor said in a statement.
Legal experts suggest that the defendant’s actions could result in additional charges, including theft, obstruction of justice, and interference with the court. These new charges could significantly complicate the suspect’s legal situation, potentially leading to harsher penalties if convicted.
This incident has raised serious questions about courtroom security, with calls for stronger measures to prevent such disruptions in the future.
While the case is ongoing, the bizarre courtroom drama has captured public attention, highlighting both the vulnerabilities of courtroom security and the resilience of the prosecutor in the face of an unsettling disruption.
